Overview: This is a project based learning experience (PBL). You will complete a series of tasks that will together tell a story. The story will have characters, creatures and adventures, created through the choices that each student makes, rendering each project unique. It is expected that the completed effort will show creativity, hard work and clarity (neat, easy to understand/read). The project will use a combination of reading, writing, and math skills along with geography, scientific studies and research. Some of the skills you will need to demonstrate are: making inferences, creating characters and details, grammar exercises, writing prompts, creating a budget, area, perimeter and volume, math word problems and problem solving.
To help keep everyone moving along, the tasks have been grouped. All the tasks for each group are to be submitted at the same time. Once that group of tasks has been approved, you can move on to the next group.
There are 2 choices as to how the tasks will be compiled into a journal that tells the story: 1) a composition notebook or 2) a ringed 1" binder. The format is basically 8 1/2" x 11" with occasional exceptions for a larger format if desired that can be folded/inserted into whichever option is chosen. An explanation of the choices has been presented in class. The tasks are the same regardless of the presentation choice.
Beginning with TASK #2, there are specific instructions supplied on a separate piece of paper/card that has been added to your journal choice. If you are working in a composition book, space has been allocated for your responses on the pages following the task explanation. If you are working in a binder, the task explanation page should be in front of each task response.
GROUP A
TASK #1: Journal cover
TASK #2: Top Secret
TASK #3: The Contract
TASK #4: The Island
This task requires that you step outside your story and create an information report about the island that you are going to visit. Use what you know is on the island from the documents that you have read and then use your imagination as to how it all fits together. It needs to make sense as you will be using it for the rest of your project. Think about what information you would like to know if you agreed to this adventure. This information can be created separately - 2-3 standard 8 1/2" x 11" pages - and then inserted in the journal. See task description for details of what you might include.

GROUP A
TASK #1: Journal cover
- Choose cover from those offered.
- Add your name (required) and other elements (if you wish).
- Attach to the front of your composition book or binder.
TASK #2: Top Secret
- Read the Top Secret information here.
- Then on the following page in your journal complete TASK #2. Use only 1 page.
TASK #3: The Contract
- To understand a contract better, watch this.
- Then read the Island contract here. Type in your name. There are 4 places - 3 following "I," and the "Full Name" at bottom - and the current date. Take out the extra spaces and "Save as" the contract: yourfirstname_contract. Example is here.
- Now, on the following page(s) in your journal, complete the journal entry questions from the Task. 1-2 pages
TASK #4: The Island

GROUP II
It is projected that you will be well into completing if not having completed Group II TASKS by March 30th, the projected date of return to school (as of 3/15/20).
TASK #5: The Team
This task has you creating your team, the THREE characters (in addition to yourself) that will populate your adventure. Again, you need to think forward into the adventure - who do you need to accomplish your mission? See the TASK card for the specifics on what you need to include in your journal pages.
TASKS #6, #7, #8, #9
These 3 TASKS are interrelated. What you decide for your itinerary and trip schedule affects what you bring (supplies). And what supplies you have affects what you can accomplish. You should do rough drafts on these 4 TASKS. You will likely need to adjust each as you further define your adventure. It may be advisable that you create your map (TASK #9) before you establish your schedule (TASK #8). Use the Internet to research prices so that your cost estimates are realistic. Remember that there are 4 of you to provide for.
TASK #6: Supplies
You are to assume that there is nothing on the Island that you can use. It all has to come with you. You do not need to include personal care items which each character would bring themselves like clothes, toothbrush, sleeping bag, etc. However you do need to include items for the whole team. You will need to think forward as to how many days you will be on the Island (food, power, etc). See TASK card for suggestions.
You can draw lines and create the table in your journal or you can use this spreadsheet. Either way, it needs to contain the same information: the item, how many of that item you need, price for 1 of that item and total cost for that item (price for 1 x number you need). If you use the spreadsheet, you are to make your own copy as you did for the contract in TASK #3. Save as yourfirstname_supplies and then complete it. Example is here. You are welcome to, but not required to, use the items from example to start your thinking; some things may not work with some of your other choices.
If you need to use multiple pages, either in your journal or spreadsheet, be sure that you have a page total at the bottom of each page and a grand total on the last page.
TASK #7: Itinerary
Refer back to the beginning documents for information. Recall that you are headed to an island in the Pacific Ocean. See TASK card for things to think about. You are to create journal entries to include required items on TASK card: Type(s) of travel for whole team, how long it takes and any extra resources you might need. Remember your team members may live in different places. What you plan in this TASK must be consistent with TASK #5 where you defined your team. You can present your entry as a table if you wish but you must include all required information.
TASK #8: Schedule
In this TASK you will define the scope of your adventure. Once you arrive, how long will you be there and what will you do. Include the time it will take to get from one place on the Island to another. In order to do this you need to know about the Island - what's there and where - which is TASK #9. Again decisions are interrelated! Your journal must include information for each day of your stay on the Island.
TASK #9: Island Map
Take a look at this resource on maps and drawing them to scale. You can draw your map in your journal or you can use plain copy paper, brown paper (paper bag) or graph paper or something else of your choosing but no larger than ledger size (11" x 17").

ITASK #11: Dinosaur Pens
The TASK card is here. A thorough job of observing and recording your impressions and factual information is the expectation! Use larger paper than your journal if needed. Be sure that you follow all the directions. Extra points for drawing the pen to scale.
TASK #12: Main Compound
The TASK card is here. The compound is the heart of the Island operation. You are again working from both sides - you are designing what is here, how it is arranged, how much space was devoted to what, how all the pieces functioned together - at the same time that you are discovering it as part of your job to record and retrieve information for PreH Corp. Use larger paper than your journal if needed. Be sure that you follow all the directions. Extra points for drawing the compound to scale.

TASK #13: The List
The TASK card is here. You are to create an entry for 6 different dinosaurs. If you are using your journal, please begin each dinosaur on a new page. You may use this Google doc page instead. Please make a copies. Rename the copies with your name and dinosaur number: Name_dino1, Name_dino2. In either format you may draw the picture of the dinosaur or you can use an image from the Internet. If you are using the Google doc, this video provides help with copying and inserting your image in the document.
Resources for dinosaurs research: While dinosaurs are not exactly a "current" topic, the information on various dinosaurs has changed through time. Try to use accurate information, not just the first thing you find. You may need to look multiple places to find all the requested information, including scientific names.
Here are some possiblities to use:
Dinosaur Facts for Kids - list of various dinosaurs is on the right.
World Book online - get sign in from Mr. Haynie. Once signed on, go to "Student" resource and search
EPIC - all of you should have received an invitation to this collection of ebooks from Mr. J. Sign on with his EPIC class code or you can sign on as a guest with my class code - available from Mr. Haynie.
